Getting started
How do I create a group?
Open FairShare, tap the Home tab, then tap the + button in the top-right corner. Give your group a name, pick an icon, and invite members by email or by sharing the invite link.
How do I add an expense?
Inside a group, tap Add Expense. Enter the amount, description, who paid, and how to split it. You can also scan a receipt with the camera to auto-fill the details.
How does settling up work?
Open the group and tap Settle Up to see who owes whom. Record a payment to clear a balance, and in India you can tap Pay via UPI to open your UPI app with the amount pre-filled. Balances update in real time for every member.
Is FairShare free?
Yes — FairShare is free to use, with no transaction limits, no ads, and no premium tier for core features.
Is there a web version?
No — FairShare is a native mobile app. Download the app on Android or iOS to get receipt scanning, push notifications, and one-tap UPI settlement.
Which platforms is FairShare on?
FairShare is available on Android and iOS, with your data synced across both. Grab the mobile app from our download page.
Account & sign-in
What sign-in methods can I use?
You can create an account with an email and password, or use Continue with Apple or Continue with Google for one-tap sign-in. All three methods are available on both iOS and Android.
I forgot my password. How do I reset it?
On the login screen, tap Continue with email, then tap Forgot password?. Enter your email address and we'll send you a reset link.
My verification email never arrived.
Check your spam or junk folder first. If it's not there, sign in and tap Resend verification on the prompt that appears. Make sure you're checking the correct inbox — the email is sent from noreply@fairshare-1a494.firebaseapp.com.
How do I change my display name or photo?
Tap the You tab at the bottom, then tap your name or photo to edit your profile.
How do I delete my account?
Go to You → Settings → Delete Account. Account deletion is permanent and irreversibly removes all your data — groups, expenses, and balances — from our servers. Please settle any outstanding debts in your groups before deleting. You can also find step-by-step instructions at fairshareapp.co.in/delete_account.html.
Splitting & expenses
How do I invite someone to a group?
Open the group, tap the members icon in the header, then tap Invite. You can send an invite link via any app, or enter their email directly. If they're not on FairShare yet, you can also add them with Guest mode (see below).
How does receipt scanning work?
When adding an expense, tap Scan Receipt and snap a photo. FairShare's AI reads every line item, price, tax, and tip, then lets you assign individual items to people in your group — no manual entry for long restaurant bills. Learn more about AI scanning.
Can I split unequally?
Yes. FairShare supports four split modes: equal, by exact amount, by percentage, and item-by-item. You have full control over how each expense is divided — you can even preview the math with our split calculator.
Can I edit or delete an expense after adding it?
Yes. Tap the expense to open it, then tap Edit. Only the person who created the expense (or a group admin) can edit or delete it.
What currencies are supported?
FairShare supports 18 currencies — including INR (₹), USD ($), EUR (€), GBP (£), AUD, SGD, and AED — across 67 countries, making it well suited to international trips and multi-currency groups.
What are recurring expenses?
Recurring expenses let you set any expense — rent, subscriptions, internet bills — to auto-add on a daily, weekly, monthly, or yearly schedule. Set it once and FairShare handles the rest.
Guest mode
What is Guest mode?
Guest mode lets you add someone to a group without them needing the app. Enter their name (and optionally their email) and they appear in all balance calculations immediately with a Guest badge. When they later sign up with that same email, their entire history — every group, expense, and balance — transfers to their account automatically.
Does a guest need to download FairShare?
No. Guests are added by any group member with just a name and optional email — no installation, sign-up, or action required from them. They're included in splits and balances from the moment they're added.
Can guests be assigned to expenses and receipt scans?
Yes — guests work exactly like registered members. You can assign them to equal, exact-amount, percentage, and item-by-item splits, including items from AI receipt scanning. Their share appears in the group's balance summary.
What happens when a guest signs up?
FairShare detects the matching email at first login and automatically migrates everything — every group they were added to, every assigned expense, and all outstanding balances. The placeholder is replaced with their real account, and they see a confirmation: "You've been added to X groups — all set!"
How many guests can a group have?
Each group supports up to 5 guest placeholders alongside unlimited registered members.
Payments & settlement
How do I settle up?
Tap Settle Up inside any group to see who owes whom. In India, tap Pay via UPI to open your preferred UPI app (GPay, PhonePe, Paytm, BHIM, and others) with the exact amount pre-filled — no manual entry needed.
Does FairShare actually move money?
No. FairShare is a tracker, not a payment processor — we never handle your money. UPI deep-links simply open your existing UPI app with amounts pre-filled; the actual payment happens there.
What is "Simplify Debts"?
Simplify Debts reduces the number of transactions needed to settle a group. Instead of everyone paying everyone, FairShare calculates the minimum number of payments to clear all balances. Group owners can toggle it in Group Settings.
How do I send a payment reminder?
Open the group → go to Balances → tap the debt entry → select Send Reminder. The other person receives a push notification with the amount owed.
Notifications
I'm not receiving push notifications.
Check that notifications are enabled for FairShare in your device's Settings → Notifications → FairShare. Also make sure you're signed in — notifications are tied to your account.
How do I turn off notifications?
Go to You → Settings in the app to manage notification preferences, or disable them entirely in your device's system settings.
Your data
Is my financial data safe?
Yes. All data is encrypted in transit (TLS) and at rest (Firebase). FairShare never stores UPI IDs or VPAs on our servers — your payment details stay on your device only. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
Where is my data stored?
All data is stored securely in Google Firebase (Firestore) on servers in Asia South (Mumbai).
Can I export my data?
Yes. Go to You → Settings → Export Data to download a copy of your groups and expenses.
Does FairShare work offline?
Yes. FairShare is offline-first — you can add expenses, update splits, and view balances without a connection. Everything syncs automatically when you reconnect.
