Built because Splitwise started charging.
FairShare was created by a developer who hit Splitwise's paywall and went looking for a free alternative — and found nothing good enough. So he built it himself.
Our story
Splitting bills with friends should be effortless. But for years, the best apps started adding paywalls, transaction limits, and ads to one of the most basic financial utilities people use. That felt wrong.
"I hit Splitwise's limit on a group trip and realised I was being asked to pay a monthly subscription just to split a dinner. I looked for alternatives and they all had the same problems. So I spent a weekend building the first version of FairShare."
That weekend prototype became an app available in 67 countries on Android, iOS, and the web — with AI receipt scanning, real-time sync, and UPI deep-linking built in from day one.
What we're building
Money conversations are uncomfortable. Chasing a friend for ₹200 feels petty. Forgetting who owes what creates tension. FairShare's mission is to remove the friction from shared finances — so the focus stays on the experience, not the spreadsheet.
The core of FairShare — splitting bills, tracking balances, settling up — is free to use. We're building features people actually want, not subscription upsells designed to extract money from casual users.
How we got here
FairShare launches on Android
First public release on Google Play. Core bill-splitting, group management, and real-time sync via Firebase.
AI receipt scanning ships
Point your camera at any restaurant bill. AI reads every item, price, and tax — and assigns costs in seconds.

67 countries and growing
From Bengaluru flatmates splitting rent to travel groups in Europe — FairShare is used everywhere people share costs.
See it in action
Dashboard, AI receipt scanning, group balances, spending insights — all in a clean dark UI that gets out of your way.

What we stand for
No paywalls on the basics
Splitting bills, tracking balances, settling up — these should never require a subscription. That's the founding principle.
Total transparency
Every calculation is visible. Every balance is explained. No hidden rounding, no mystery charges.
Privacy-first
Your financial data is encrypted and never sold. We collect only what's needed to make the app work.
Built for India
Native UPI deep-linking and INR-native design — features that work the way India actually pays.
The builder
FairShare is designed, built, and shipped by a single developer — with a north star of making shared finances feel effortless rather than awkward.
Debayan Samajpati
Android developer based in India. Built FairShare after getting frustrated with Splitwise's paywall. Ships every feature personally — from the AI receipt scanner to the UPI settlement flow. Believes that the best productivity tools are the ones that stay out of your way.
What makes FairShare different
FairShare isn't just a ledger. AI scans any receipt and assigns costs automatically. Balances simplify so the group settles in as few payments as possible. Guest Mode lets you add people who don't have the app yet. And everything syncs in real time across every device in the group.
Available on Android and iOS. Press kit available here.
